Maria Beatriz

(Lisbon, 1940)

Lives and works in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Maria Beatriz studied biology before she starts with engraving at Cooperativa engraving Lisbon, then she went to Paris, where she studied drawing and engraving at Atelier SWHayter, supported with a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (1966-68).

In the 70s of the last century studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts Rotterdam, where finished in 1973 with a Diploma in Painting and Graphics.Exposes for the first time individually in the 80s (century. XX), with the exhibition "La tierra es lo probable paradise lost" in the Museum of Modern Art in Arnhem, NL.In the 90s (century. XX) exhibits at Casa da Cerca, Almada, PT, in Galeria Palmira Suso, Lisbon, and in Galeria Diferença, Lisbon, PT.In 2002 exposes its series "Vita Brevis" at the Modern Art Centre, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon. This individual shows have roaming for Kunstuitleen KNSM, Amsterdam and the Centre Culturel Calouste Gulbenkian in Paris in 2004.

His most recent solo museum exhibition in Portugal was the exhibition "Potato Eaters" at the Museum of Electricity, EDP Foundation, Lisbon. About this exhibition the artist said the following:.. "It is possible that this exhibition is the latest in large format (i have many problems with osteoarthritis) and wanted in this semi goodbye to refer to Van Gogh. Because, in the current situation where money has to gauge everything seemed relevant remind you, for having dedicated to develop your talent, following a deep inner desire. Without being a success or money. And so was the life of many other artists that I have followed.
