Nuno Sousa Vieira is a Portuguese artist known for his thought-provoking installations and performances that explore the relationship between art, technology, and human experience. His multidisciplinary practice encompasses sculpture, video, sound, and interactive media, and is characterized by a strong conceptual focus and a willingness to experiment with new forms of expression.
Vieira studied Fine Arts at the University of Porto, where he received a Master’s degree in Multimedia Art. Since then, he has exhibited his work in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Portugal and internationally, including at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Vigo, the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, and the Venice Biennale.

One of Vieira’s most notable works is “The Unfolding of Time,” an installation that explores the concept of time and its impact on human perception. The installation features a large clock-like structure made of steel and glass, with video projections that play on the surface of the glass. The video content includes images of natural phenomena, such as the movement of the sun and the phases of the moon, as well as scenes from everyday life. Through this juxtaposition of different temporalities, Vieira invites viewers to reflect on the complex relationship between time, space, and human experience.
Another significant project by Vieira is “Virtual Body,” a series of interactive performances that use motion-capture technology to create immersive and participatory experiences for viewers. In these performances, participants wear sensors that track their movements and translate them into digital imagery that is projected onto screens or other surfaces. The result is a fluid and dynamic representation of the body in motion, which challenges traditional notions of physicality and embodiment.
Vieira’s work often incorporates elements of science and technology, reflecting his fascination with the ways in which these fields intersect with art and human experience. In his installation “Matter and Energy,” for example, he uses sound and light to create a visceral and immersive experience that explores the fundamental forces of the universe.
Nuno Sousa Vieira’s work is characterized by a deep engagement with conceptual and philosophical ideas, a willingness to experiment with new forms of expression, and a commitment to using art as a means of engaging with and understanding the world around us. His work has established him as a leading figure in contemporary art in Portugal and beyond.
